Metal roofing or bumbung besi in Malay, may be an appealing option to asphalt shingles whether replacing an existing roof or adding a roof to a new structure. Metal roofing is durable enough to withstand storms, hail, and wildfires. It is a highly durable material with a life expectancy of 50 years or more, depending on the environment and metal utilized.
Finding a competent contractor with expertise installing metal roofing is one of the most critical aspects of your new metal roof. Faulty installations and poor craftsmanship, like with traditional shingle roofs, can contribute to performance (such as leakage) and cosmetic concerns.
A metal roofing contractor with experience and knowledge may also assist you in selecting the ideal metal roofing system for your budget, business, or house. It is just as vital to hire a competent and qualified contractor for your metal roof installation as it is to select the finest metal roof system option.
Below are the ways that you should know in order to install metal roofs perfectly:
1. Measure your roof
Take measurements of one portion of your roof’s length, breadth, and rise. Before you can start updating your roof, you must first take an exact measurement and purchase your materials. Measure the length and breadth of one part of the roof first, then the distance the roof climbs from the lowest to tallest point.
2. Remove old roofs
Take off the old roofing. Although corrugated metal roofing may be installed over shingles, it is suggested that all previous roofs be removed for the best foundation. Work at a steady, comfortable pace, taking care not to rip up or carry off too much old roofing at once. You don’t want to let any rain or moisture into your structure, always remove the old roofing on a day (or group of days) when the weather is predicted to be dry and sunny.
3. Prepare your roof surface
Metal roofing may be installed over existing shingles. If you do this, you should first use furring strips and a waterproof barrier. If you believe it is excessive and that you will have an unheated shed, you can screw right through the shingles. Again, using battens reduces the weight of your structure while increasing the chance of condensation beneath your roof surface. Battens, on the other hand, are less expensive than solid decking and quite enough for a modest, unheated shelter.
4. Install edging and underlayment
When installing your eave edging, fit it to the underside of your eave and onto the face — it should cover the full face of your eave. Screw the eave edging to the bottom of the eave, through the flashing lip. Then, using stainless steel finishing nails in the same colour as your flashing, attach the faces together.
5. Instal metal roof panels
The method for installing the metal roof panel varies depending on the type of metal roof product you have, but start at the edge and make sure the initial panel overhang the existing edging by an inch, if appropriate. Otherwise, run your first panel flush with your roof’s rake edge and 1″ above the eave if you have gutters – 3″ if you don’t.
